Top 50 MLB Prospects for 2010

Every good sports blog does a top baseball prospects list, right? Well, here's ours (and I figured we didn't need a picture on this one). And I limited it to 50 because when you go to 100 you get way too many 2009 draftees who lack a minor league track record. Rating those guys in inherently difficult.

Will there be fantasy rankings this year?

Chapman is kind of a guess because he has no real statistics to judge. He's obviously got a great arm and should be in the majors by 2011. While I think he has more potential to be a bust than guys like Wade Davis, I think he probably has the second or third highest ceiling of any pitching propsect. Plus he's made it through ages 18-22ish without a serious arm injury. That should change when he gets to Dustyland. I think how good he'll be depends on how he's handled. If the Reds throw him into the big leagues this year, his career will suffer.

I can't say we'll do fantasy rankings unless someone feels inclined to pitch in. They require a lot of effort (plus I'm in a fantasy league against most of these assholes).

A few items to note:

There are some really good catching prospects out there. Half will probably end up moving to first base before their arbitration years, but I still don't ever remember a year with such solid catching prospects.

There is a real lack of middle infield prospects. Guys like Frazier and Sizemore are good but don't have huge ceilings. Second base is usually the position with the fewest prospects, though. At short, I don't think there's a single prospect who projects to have the defense to stay at the position and be a well above average hitter. Beckham has the potential but he's ages away, and guys like Escobar and Castro (1) don't have power right now and (2) aren't planning on "walking their way to the majors."

One thing I value much more than other people is plate discipline. That doesn't just mean walks, it means walk-to-strikeout ratio. In my opinion, those are the statistics which indicate best whether a hitter will be able to adapt to MLB pitching. The hitters at the top generally have great plate discipline.
