MU Gets "More Athletic," Tells Acker/Cubillan/Hazel Thanks But No Thanks.
Welcome Darius Johnson-Odom, a 6'2'' JUCO combo guard who has apparently qualified at the D1 level and is elligible to play in 2009. His best attributes include not qualifying out of high school, dunking, and making 14 year old girls scream (ok, that wasn't a 14 year old girl; that was me.)

What I want to know is why was Mo Acker at his H.S. practice there?
This makes things much more promising in 2009. Let's take a look at the makeup of the roster: player's name, position, class, size, swarming %, and an * for those who did not qualify out of high school.
Likely Starters:
Junior Cadougan - PG, Fr., 6'1" 280 lbs., 79% swarming.
*Dwight Buycks - SG, Jr., 6'2" 180 lbs., 99% swarming.
*Jimmy Butler - SF, Jr., 6'6" 195lbs., 91% swarming.
Lazar Hayward - SF, Sr., 6'6" 210lbs., 71% swarming.
Jeronne Mamon - PF, Fr., 6'7", 230lbs., 94% swarming.
Bench
*Maurice Acker - PG, Sr., 5'2" 103lbs., 82% swarming.
*Darius Johnson-Odom - SG, So., 6'1" 175lbs., 98% swarming.
Erik Williams - SF, Fr., 6'7" 200lbs., 85% swarming.
*Joe Fulce - PF, Jr., 6'7" 200lbs., 77% swarming.
And a bunch of stiffs that can't swarm, one of whom is gone.
That's an awful lot of swarming abilities right there. I know of at least 2 people on this blog that are excited about this.
I'll spare you the tension, those two are me and OHR. Anyone else want to proclaim their excitement?
Buzz B! Williams has done his best to make 2009-10 a good season rather than just a transitional year. I love that they've got 2 incoming guys who have more experience than freshman.
Though there will be a step back next year from this year, the team will have much more size and depth. What I like most is that Buzz B! has evened out the classes. He now has 2/3 seniors, 3/4 juniors, 1/2 sophomores, and 4 freshman. I was worried that he'd get 6 freshman, which would handcuff future recriting efforts and lead to a huge drop when that class graduates.
Not so fast OHR.
As fast as his handlers can take his youtube videos down, he keep putting new videos up.
Jimmy Butler and Joe "Swiss Cheese Kneecap" Fulce qualified out of high school; they just chose to perfect their swarming ability in JUCO rather than sign with low D1 programs out of high school.
I'm leery of the JUCO influx, but these aren't the Tom Crean JUCOS. These kids can actually play (swarm). Gone are the days of Marcus "Shifty" Jackson, Lawrence "Trend" Blackledge, Jamil "Sweet Tits" Lott, and Niv "Heeb" Berkovitz.
I fucking LOVE Dwight Buycks and MPS. I mean that.
LOL at my man MO Acker listed by Condy at 5'2'' 103 lbs. If you count his Tek 9, he's at least 5'4'' 110lbs.
Before you guys get too excited about your golden eagles, check out the badgers hot new recruit.
Boom!
Arguably the best chest passer to come through Minnesota since Dan Fitzgerald.
Enjoy his -24% swarm rating.
Yeah? Well ND recruit Mike Broghammer was named second team all state in Minnesota. Early word is that he intends to enter the layup contest during Cracker Barrel All-State weekend.
That's fantastic. CGB, it's a good thing UW doesn't put names on the back of their jerseys because it would be confusing as hell to have three guys with the last name of Bruesewitz on the floor. Something tells me he won't be very good at swarming.
BCB, I think MU actually recruited Broghammer for awhile. Luckily Turncoat Tommy left and saved us that potential embarrassment.
What's with Wes Matthews Jr. being in the dunk contest tonight? He's like only the 4th best swarmer on his own team. There are probably 30 better dunkers in the Big East alone.
I wish I had a chance to comment more often on here. I love these kinds of posts, they keep interest in MU bball high even while swarming is at a low point on tv. Plus, youtube swarming keeps us entertained.
Dwight Buycks is my friend on facebook...beat that, suckers.
Anyways, the swarm factor being so high for us next year is a real boost...swarm factor is probably a 75% predictor for success, so MU has a good shot at the NCAAs just due to their swarm potential. They'll certainly beat un-swarmy UW with ease, provided the refs are swarm-friendly.
Condy, I'm mulling your fantasy baseball trade...don't retract it just yet...haven't had a chance to sit down and review it.
As much as I love fundamentally sound white basketball players (I am a huge UW and MSU fan), you cannot recruit players from Hopkins. For those that didn't attend UW, Hopkins is one of two 'Jewish' schools in the TC suburbs. I believe in the history of history, there has never been a successful jewish basketball player. Perhaps he's not one of the chosen people (i doubt since 100% of the people I know from Hopkins are), but I'd be worried.
Also, considering Catholics are upset at having a non-catholic Christian (Obama) speaking at the school, what were they even doing in Minnetonka?
Perhaps you didn't hear Joe Paterno during the NIT semi's the other night. Quoth the undead "Basketball used to be a Jewish man's game, now it's a black man's game". Red Auerbach agrees.
And ND would have been better off recruiting O'bama to play the black man's game and Whitehammer to give the commencement address.
Also, the Bears just traded for Jay Cutler. When reached for comment, Cutler said he was anxiously anticipating throwing balls to Rashied Davis and Brandon Lloyd.
If you're holding Cutler in a keeper league, is it worth keeping him for an 8th round pick any more? I tend to think not. That sucks.
Wasn't Richard Shaw jewish?
Jordan was Jewish. I think he converted, right?
Cutler is good, but the Bears will bring him down to their level. Vandy blows.
I've never been so proud of the usage of the word "swarm." Well done fellas. Well done.
This week in basketball:
Big Ten - 3
Big East - 0
Now i realize that top to bottom, the big east is the best conference, but i think you guys have greatly undersold the big ten this year. The fact that someone actually believed the big 10 would only win 2 games the entire tourney (much less the first day) was patently absurd.
Big east fans, I guess you do have the women's tournament to hang your hat on.
2 things:
1) Michigan State is having a very good tournament. That doesn't mean the Big Ten is having a good tournament. The Big Ten got almost a quarter of all at-large bids. Only 2 of the teams made the Sweet 16. Only Michigan State made it beyond there. The reason MSU was successful: they didn't play "big ten" style basketball.
I don't think anyone inherently hates teams in the big ten, besides other big ten fans. The same way I hate Louisville, Cinci, West Virginia and Syracuse. But 90% of America hates "big ten style" basketball. Why do they have to play that way? Specifically, why does MSU play that way? They have constantly had top-10 recruiting classes since they won the national championship. Using Scout.com rankings, here are the national rankings and position of recruited players the past 4 years:
#8 C
#19 C
#4 PF
#7 PG
#26 PF
#4 SG
#5 PG
#13 SG
#9 C
#11 SF
#13 SF
That's it. Not a single player not in the top 100 nationally. And not a whole lot of goofy white stiffs. These are good players. If they played the style they did last night against UConn, they wouldn't lose a game in the big ten. Assuming they would try to win games 39-37, I figured they'd lose in the second round - the same way Ohio State loses despite having a lot of talented players. I was wrong. But I'm still puzzled at why MSU doesn't open the game up all the time, and it makes me hate "big ten basketball" more than ever.
The Big East has had a great tournament and easily demontrated how much better of a conference it is at the top than any other one. The biggest loser conference: the ACC. Like Michigan State to the Big Ten, UNC is the outlier of the group. They are supremely talented and have had a top-5 recruiting class every year since 1978. But the rest of the conference was very overrated. I was a bit surprised by that, but that's what Pomeroy predicted.
2) Michigan State cheated. When Stanley Robinson dunks and starts slapping his feet on the backboard, the other team may either (1) call a time out or (2) lower their heads and slowly dribble up court. MSU quickly threw the ball in every time and ran down court, scoring in transition. The refs should have called a technical foul.
Further, when Stanley Robinson blocks your shot and starts yelling and pounding his chest, it is illegal to pick up the ball and throw it to an open teammate in the lane. Again, a techinal foul should have been called.
Stanley Robinson is easily the funniest player in college basketball. More so than Jimmy Butler.
The Big East may not only be the best conference this year, this may have honestly been the best conference year ever. Most #1 seeds ever and most elite-8 qualifiers ever. Three more than the Big Televen in each category, no less. Michigan State is clearly an elite team (and one that I have been gambling heavily on during the tournament, including that absurd 7.5 point spread tomorrow), but one elite team does not a conference make.
