Despite the fact that the Bub is "Less Now" than VCRs and cream soda (seriously, I can't watch ESPN anymore) it's time to get back to baseball. I have a good feeling about this series, I just hope we don't have to rely on Mench and Jenkins to produce our runs again. Yost pulled Suppan after he gave up one hit in the 7th inning of Sunday's game; one can only hope that this won't be a rare occurrence from here on out. I won't make any predictions on the series, but I am optimistic given the pitchers we are facing.

Syntax is your friend.
Sheets is on the 15 day DL. Why Sheets, God? It's great that we get one of the young guys in the rotation, but why couldn't Suppan go down?
Nate Silver likes the Crew
7/16 Game thoughts:
Dave Bush gave up 5 hits and 3 runs in 6 innings worth of work; with Sheets on the 15 day, the Brewers are going to need similar numbers out of other starters. Turnbow was a little dicey last night, but again, with Sheets out, not using Villanueva or Wise helps.
That, and we need to make some "Hebrew Hammer" shirts and signs...this guy is just nuts.
Another good article from Nate Silver, writing in a very old-school BP way. I like that he acknowledges that the line-by-line comparisons can be misleading. For instance, I personally think the Cubs' rotation is significantly better than the Brewers', which tends to erase the leads that the Brewers have throughout the rest of the diamond. With the 3.5 game lead though, the Brewers are still favorites to win the division. Injuries and key additions will probably determine which team, if not both, are playing in October because they're very close in overall talent.
As for the Brewers, I'm starting to get the feeling that Ned Yost is starting to understand that none of his starters are suited to go past 6 innings, or, in Suppan's case, 5 innings. Dave Bush taught him a lesson last night again. The bullpen has been upgraded significantly with Parra and Balfour, even if only for a short while. I'm anxious to see if Balfour can keep the ball in the park enough to be the dominating reliever that he has the stuff to be. I should correct that to say "had" because I haven't seen him pitch in a couple years, and he did undergo an arm surgery.
Thoughts from last night's game:
Bush is damn lucky there was nobody on base for the 3 Hrs he allowed. It's just a matter of time before he gets burned. Everyone was making a big deal about what a big boost his "quality start" gives the team. His start was crap. He absorbed some innings, but people really shouldn't make too much of his 4.50 very much earned runs.
BA or Bill mentioned that hitting in front of P. Fielder may have a lot more to do with the Braun and Hardy's power numbers than everyone thinks. Hitting before Prince results in a lot of fastballs being piped down the plate. Have you seen what Hardy has done since he stopped hitting in front of Prince? I'm not trying to say that Braun and Hardy aren't good hitters. I just think Prince deserves some of the credit for the 30ish Hrs that have been hit in the spot before his in the order. Remember when Jim Edmonds used to get to hit ahead of Pujols or between Pujols and a healthy Rolen? Yeah, he put up some numbers too.
I'm looking forward to seeing Parra in action. Hopefully they didn't move him too quickly this year. His minor league numbers clearly indicate he's ready. I hate the Suppan signing more and more everyday.
Oh, did anyone else see Lovinus picking at his face on camera in the bottom of the 6th yesterday? He was in the shot for about 5 seconds and looked absolutely retarded.
Overheard during class tonight:
"Police! Freeze! Get on the Ground!"
I didn't see Lovinus on there. This was during the first game with the Diamondbacks? Who was up, how many outs and what was the count? I tried to pull it up on mlbtv, but didn't see anything in the bottom of the sixth. Just a pretty quick 1, 2, 3 inning.
7/17 Game thoughts:
Caught innings 5-9 on radio/TV. Vargas left early (he got to 100 pitches after 5 innings), but good work by Shouse and a 6K, lights out performance by Villanueva. Stranding 11 runners tonight sucked, but at least we can hit the ball. Not scoring a runner on 3rd with no outs always gets me scratching my head. Cordero has 4 saves in a row, I hope we don't wear him out.
With Sheets out 4-6 weeks (I heard only 2-3 as well) there has never been a better time for Capuano to pull his head out of his ass. Also, winning close games against a team above .500 is cause for optimism.
Best part is the Cubs lost. They're back 4.5 now. Drew Olsen came on Bob and Brian this morning and helped ease some tension, reminding people that it would likely take the Cubs two weeks to gain that ground when they aren't playing the Brewers. If the Crew can just keep that 4-5 game margin going...
Just to set the record straight, Villanova had 5Ks tonight and this was Cordero's third straight save and fourth straight appearance.
Losing Sheets for at least a month sucks, but in reality, Yost would've kept Gallardo in the pen even if Capuano continued to suck, so I don't think the loss of Sheets will hurt that much, as Yovanni should be able to pick up the slack.
Big time loss by the cubs tonight. Their past few victories have been so close that it only boosted their morale, so it's good it see it cut down. Also nice to see Kendall not contribute and get booed by his own team's fans. I hope he sucks for the next few games so that the fans never forgive him and his time in Chicago is short-lived. Hopefully another load of money wasted.
I don't like that Bonds seems to be resting for the next series though. I wish he would play a whole game and get worn out enough to skip the Brewers series. Crazy roidy knees. That's what happens when the weight of your upper body increases so drastically over a relatively short period of time that the bone structure in your legs can't readjust to bear the excess load and the point of failure becomes the knee. If Bonds really wanted to convince people he didn't take steroids, he's be playing every day. Otherwise I don't see how he could have bad knees. It's not like he was ever a catcher.
Let's hope for a 5.5 game lead after tomorrow and that Crapuano can get his shit under control.
Ben Who?
So the Cubs won today AND gave up two more homers to Barry. Had the Brewers lost today, this would probably have gone down as the worst day of the season for me.
We drew 41K today. Holy hell.
Attendance has been absolutely insane.
