Dodgers Series, April 2-4
I figured we could centralize game discussion and such in threads series by series instead of by games and random posts this season. Yes, we're already two games into the season, but there has already been a bunch of infuriating shit taking place. Yes, I'm talking once again about the Brewers' baserunning and bunting. That double steal? Bunting with Corey Hart? Ned Yost is trying to get too cute with things and insert himself too much into the play on the field when, in reality, he should just let the team's talent speak for itself. If we see shit like we've seen tonight game in and game out, I'll stop attending games before they open the roof.

So I missed innings 1-5 because of a finance test, but I heard about the failed double steal in the 6th or so and immediately thought that the Bub would be pissed.
Beyond that, not too shabby. Weeks swang at first pitches a bit much and Aquino walking the opposing pitcher to load the bases was frustrating. Also, I almost put my hand through my computer when Roidbow's first pitch was taken to deep center.
But how 'bout our fucking catcher tonight? Moeller on the bench makes me the happiest person in the world...
I think you mean Moeller on Cincinnati's bench, don't you? Wait, what the hell am I doing up at 7:10 AM?
Anyone want me to save them a seat on the Suppan bandwagon?
I don't need a seat on the bandwagon, I'm already planted in the frint stearing that wagon along at rocket speed.
Yost's decisions were absolutely awful last night. He is getting cute with the offense. That's annoying. Against a left-handed pitcher, the Brewers have some offensive firepower. The double steal was absolutely awful, though Hart was at least down in the count when they tried it. There are some players that will be fooled by a double steal. Jeff Kent is not one of them. He's been in the league way too long. Bill Hall has another out on the basepaths. He's well on his way towards leading the league, which he may have done last year. (can't remember which brewer did)
The decision that blows my mind is the decision to pitch Greg Aquino in a one-run game. Aquino is without a doubt the worst pitcher on the team. Dessens, Vargas, Villanueva, etc all were better options. Yost is still going to slot pitchers into innings regardless of the score. Aquino in the sixth, Wise in the seventh, Turnbow in the eighth. This bullpen needs a lot of help. Capellan or Sarfate need to step it up and get Aquino off the roster.
Isn't the Dodgers' outfield hilarious? I don't care what people say about Meche or Suppan or even Gary Matthews Jr. Juan Pierre was not only the worst signing of the offseason, but it was arguably the worst signing of all time. I really hope people took my advice and put money on the Padres and Diamondbacks.
Other notes from around baseball:
I usually don't like to make assumptions about how things will look in September after just 2 days of baseball, but I'm comfortable saying the following:
Miguel Cabrera is huge. They weren't kidding about the weight he put on in the offseason. He is shaped exactly like Albert Pujols right now. I don't think he's going to be able to stay at third base long into his career, but he's one of the top 5 hitters in baseball. He'll finish the year with one of the top 3 OPS's in the NL.
In a related story, the Washington Nationals are the worst team I've ever seen. Matt Chico is getting rocked today. If Chico is this bad and Patterson got rocked in one of the 4 starts he'll probably make this year, the Nationals could allow 1000 runs in the National League. Consider, too, that they have the worst farm system and offense in baseball. Can you imagine how bad this team would be without the two really good trades that Bowden turned in the last year? Nats fans have already taken to booing just about everything. It's going to be a really long year in Washington. Tell me you all took the under.
Anyone watching the Indians again today? This team can mash!
I agree 100% on the dodgers' outfield. There have been two separate instances where i've thought to myself 'Why the fuck are you taking second on that?' only to have the throw arrive in the middle of the next inning. However, I truly fear that Yost isn't just being overaggressive on the bases just because the defense sucks. Anybody know the ML record for outs on the basepaths? Metinks it's going to get crushed this year.
I agree completely on Cabrera. His numbers suggest he's one of those Caribbean players that is about four years older than his birth certificate indicates, but he's got such a damn baby face. This guy could be scary good in two years. Shit, he should be a top 5 guy this year. His contract may eclipse A-Rod's in two years.
Back to the Brewers, I must admit that I am already a fan of the outfield platoon. I think that in a couple weeks when both of those idiots realize that their only job is to mash opposite handed pitching, they're going to enjoy the hell out of baseball. They're going to look at their numbers and get inflated senses of self worth because their numbers reflect only strengths. They'll forget all about the nonsense from spring training. And most of all, the Brewers don't have to put up with .500 OPS from Jenkins against lefties, or a .127 OPS from Mench overall. As long as it doesn't cut into the playing time in center or right, I'm all for it.
no, but thanks for alerting me, I'm turning it on now.
AJ Hawk is going to throw out the first pitch tonight. Any bets on how much better he looks than Suppan?
Who can tell I'm bored?

At the end of last year, I predicted Cabrera to be baseball's first $300M man. Assume the skyrocketing of salaries continues and Cabrera is going to sign for some ridiculous sum. If the Brewers gave him a 12-year, $300M deal right now, I'd be the happiest guy around.
Predictions on Suppan tonight. I'll be conservative and say 7.2 IP, 4H, 1R, 1 BB, 5K. Is he the best pitcher around? No. But he's a really damn good one!
Hahahaha. How much did Ken Hawk Harrelson's final call from the game today sound like the great, "fly ball..............caught" call from Major League II? What a bitch.
F!
Mench is starting over Hart in RF today.

Bill Hall just had a 12 pitch AB.
Yost has never believed in platoons, and he's too concerned with players' feelings. Mench should never play against a right handed pitcher. Yost is going to start him at least 4 days a week. This means probably 2 starts against righties a week.
In other news, Bill Hall now has 2 outs on the basepaths. He is well on his way. That pickoff could be the difference in this game. I said the reason the Brewers won't make the playoffs is because of defense and baserunning. Baserunning outs are the most overlooked aspect of why teams don't win games. Let's hope Hall's mental lapse won't cost them this game.
I don't like Suppan, but I am happy that he isn't complete trash at the plate. The Brewers need better hitting pitchers.
Craig Counsel: the wizard of third base.
Another. Out. On. The. Base. Paths. Fuck.
I don't know how many of you have seen this or read about it, but there's been a lot of talk today about Francisco Rodriguez doctoring baseballs in Tuesday's game versus Texas. For those that haven't seen the video, here is a link
It looks pretty damning. In part of the video, you can see a white substance on the underside of the brim. Some people have suggested that the substance is rosin, but even that would be illegal. Good times.
