As of April 26 . . .

The Brewers are 2nd in the majors in home runs, 3rd in slugging, 8th in OBP, and yet 9th in runs scored. Why? Oh, because once a game Bill Hall decides that since he's black, he must also be fast. However, he fails to realize that every time he tries to take an extra base, he gets out. I still don't hate Hall yet, and there are certainly others to blame for baserunning woes, but this, coupled with defensive ineptitude, is gonna cost the Brewers many wins this season.

Bench Hall.

It's the age old technique to teach players not to be boneheads.

Bench Hall for 2 games and I guarantee he'll think twice before getting picked off again.

I think everyone around here has been happy with Yost this year for the most part. I can only speak for myself, but tell me if I'm wrong.

Carlson, it looks like your new job is pretty challenging . . . $lash, I agree that, for the most part, Yost has done a good job this year. His bullpen usage is still suboptimal, but we saw what overworking turnbow did to him last year. I think we're all very pleased that he's stuck with the outfield platoon.

What the S is going on here?

I would venture to say that the lineup construction is also contributing to the problem, though not to the degree that baserunning is. Hardy and Weeks have been hitting with no one on base. When Fielder gets on base, he's soon followed by Johnny Estrada, who has to be the worst hitter on the team. When Menchkins gets on base, he's soon followed by Craig Counsell, the second worst hitter on the team. Although lineup construction usually isn't a huge deal, I'd venture to say that moving Menchkins up two lineup spots would have resulted in 5 or more runs to this point.

Bill Hall has probably cost the Brewers 7 runs with his defense and 4 runs with his baserunning. In other words, he's cost them two games already. This stuff adds up. With good defense and baserunning, the Brewers would probably be the best team in the NL. With this shit, though, the Brewers have about a 25% chance of making the playoffs. Things are going well now, but when guys start slumping and this crap is still going on, the Brewers will hit a major skid. This has to be straightened out, and benching Bill Hall would be a nice start.

On a positive note, the Brewers and all four minor league affiliates in season are in first place right now. Very cool.

I think Hall feels the pressure of his new contract and the expectations the team put on him when they moved him to center. He needs to calm down and, I agree, benching him would be a good solution. Give him some time to sort out what's going on and come out ready to go. His defense is going to continue to be poor for most of this season as he's still learning the position, but benching him would probably help with the base-running woes he's been having.

By entering the NBA draft without an agent, Dominic James has decided to return to MU for his junior season. Don't know whether to be excited. What does everyone else think?

Very excited. That's great news. We should be very good next season. I'm thinking a top 10 team and a possible 3 seed in the tourney--best case scenario.

It should be helpful defensively, but I won't be excited until he shoots over 30% from the floor.

i can't find anyhting that says he's coming back. all i can find is that he hasn't hired an agent and has the option of withdrawing his name from the draft and returning to MU.

way to get my hopes up.

Jimmy was jumping to the conclusion that James is going to find out his draft stock isn't worth shit and will be returning next year.

He still brings quite a bit to the table. With another year of experience, Cubillan and James will continue to compliment each other well and spell each other throughout the games. James is valuable on defense, but he runs a lot and gets tired by the end of games. The same goes for Cubillan. Having two capable point guards is huge just to keep them fresh.

Although I don't like to see James shoot, he still creates quite a bit on offense. More importantly, he also creates a lot of media buzz for Marquette. We have all concluded that he's overrated, but the media loves him, which is great for Marquette and MU basketball. The style of play James brings to the court simply appeals to recruits and the media, which is of high importance in the college game. I'm glad he hasn't hired an agent. He obviously has some sense, and because of it, will likely be back next season. I'm like it. I'd say I'm excited.

A lot will depend on the development of Cubillan and the talent level of transfer point guard Maurice Acker. Acker is about 5'7" and not nearly as talented defensively as James I would assume. But James made a lot of dumb plays and cost MU games by carrying the team on his back. What MU would lose (and as the Bub pointed out, I don't think MU will) is the possibility that James breaks out and becomes an elite player. If he found a shot this summer, he could be the best point guard in the NCAA. I'd be happy if he returned, but it's not going to kill Marquette if he doesn't.
