Brewers Sign Counsell. . . . why?

Today the Brewers signed Craig Counsell to a two year deal. He will get $2.8M per year, and there is a $400k buyout in 2009. I won't even bother to include the terms of the Brewers' option in 2009 because there is no chance in snowy hell that it will be exercised.

Let's start with what's good about Counsell: (1) He is probably a better defender at every infield position that we currently have. (2) He is from Wisconsin. That's about it.

Granted $6M for two years is not much money in this market, but I simply cannot understand what value Counsell will be. Though he can fill in nicely with the glove, his glove is really his only asset. His bat isn't good enough to play anywhere on the field. When Koskie misses 162 games this year, I don't want Counsell filling in for him. When Weeks gets hurt, I'd rather see T.Graff or Jeff Cirillo playing second. I don't understand why Hall would play any position other than third or shortstop. He would be valuable in center field, but I doubt his ability to play center. By moving him to left field, you're taking ABs away from Gabe Gross and Corey Hart and giving them to Hardy and Counsell. I don't want to see Counsell hitting. Ever. Period.

The organization seems to have lost all direction. From 2003-2005, the focus was on rebuilding. Doug Melvin & Co. did not deviate from this focus and, in so doing, made the Brewers' future bright. Last year, the rebuilding motivation was replaced with a "maybe we can win this year" approach. It was foolish. The Brewers fell into the all-to-common trap of being stuck in the middle; not good enough to win and not bad enough to pack it up and rebuild. But they weren't ready to compete, and the front office should have focused on strengthening the upper minors and getting rid of bad contracts. This offseason has seen even less guided direction. What the Brewers are doing with Craig Counsell is beyond me. They aren't trying to sign J.D. Drew or any other talented player, one that might give them a chance at competing for the playoffs. I understand that free agents are signing for insane money, but if you want to compete this year, then you have to take a shot with real talent. Claudio Vargas, Johnny Estrada, Greg Aquino and Craig Counsell are not going to turn the Brewers into a playoff team, so why bother with them?

This isn't rebuilding. Nor is it competing. It's getting stuck in the middle. It's the exact problem that each member of the Cerberus (i.e. Melvin, Ash, and O'Brien) faced as G.M. of their previous teams. Their solution then, which it seems to still be now, is what got them canned. Can someone tell me how a team without an above average player at any position on the field is going to make the playoffs? Either compete or rebuild! Dammit!

I'm too fucking tired to even complain. I have to get my work done, but at least now it'll take a matter of minutes as I'll be fueled by rage.

We are all forgetting one important factor in this signing.

You may not believe this, but thinking about the CI didn't amuse me at all when I saw him signed. This is still infuriating.

I don't believe it!

But I am still pissed.

Why not Loretta?!?! Higher OBP, way better OPS, 50+ points better SLG, 30 points higher in BA! WTF? It's not like he'd cost much more. Now I'm pissed that I found out Loretta's a FA. What the fuck.

Loretta will probably seek a starting gig that won't be guaranteed here. There is some silver lining in the Counsell signing . . . we'll get compensatory and sandwich picks when Graffanino signs elsewhere that we wouldn't receive if graffanino signed here.

Didn't Loretta go to Boston without a starting job at the start of the year? I could be mistaken but, I thought he got so much run because of injuries.

Perhaps, I don't recall. In any event, lets be thankfull we aren't Orioles fans. They've made a bunch of boneheaded signings in the past few days and have basically mortgaged their draft next season. Here's a quote to sum up the orioles ineptitude from the Baltimore Sun:
"You think Houston's payout of $100 million over six years for Carlos Lee is a waste of money? Consider that, in the past six years, the Orioles spent roughly $100 million total on free-agent busts David Segui, Marty Cordova, Omar Daal, Rafael Palmeiro, Sidney Ponson, Javy Lopez and Steve Kline."

Lopez wasn't Baltimore's fault. He had to get off his cycle(s). That's for sure.

Yes, T.Graff is a Type A free agent, and the Brewers need those draft picks more than any other team in the world. But the Counsell signing doesn't change anything. If anything, it means that T.Graff wouldn't be offered arbitration. You can't really toy with the idea of Cirillo, Counsell, Koskie, T.Graff, Hardy, Hall and Weeks all on the same team. What if TGraff accepts?

He wont accept because he wants to play everyday. If he does, it'll be cheap because the Brewers aren't going to offer a lot. Then they'll trade him (or JJ Hardy, who probably will never be as good as T Graff).

At least they didn't sign Royce Clayton. See Jays, Blue.

By the way, I hate the Brewers.
Brewers Hate-Off Final Pick: All.

I'm not wasting my time getting my hopes up this offseason. F*** the Brewers and Craig Counsell.

I need a couple months away from this team this winter or I'm going to be so bitter that I won't make it to the All-Star break next season.

Unfortunately, the Brewers wouldn't have much say in how much TGraff makes in arbitration. If he accepts, the Brewers are out $4.5 million and looking to trade him ASAP. That said, it would be absurd not to offer him arby, and I'd be shocked if they didn't. But, with Dan O'Brien gaining more and more influence, I wouldn't count it out at this point.

can we start the hate-off over?

I don't think we should start the Hate-Off over, but remember that we are a mere nine months away from the 2007 Hate-Off. 2007 figures to drawf the success of the 2006 Inaugural Hate-Off. Early favorites include newcomers JD Closser, Johnny Estrada, and Craig Counsell, and, of course, wily veteran Kevin Mench. Don't count out darkhorse candidate Corey Koskie just yet, either. He's one fake injury away from stardom.

And you can't take for granted the potential that the pitching staff has to dominate. Tournament all-stars Derrick Turnbow and Zach Jackson are back, not to mention last year's winner, Ben Hendrickson. There are fresh faces, 95 losses, and cynicism a plenty. I can hardly wait until next October!

Oh my God, I'm not going to be able to put up with an entire off season with you cynical assholes. Usually I'm the cynical one that depends on others to balance me back to sanity (see: Monday's packers game). But I'm going to go fucking nuts with you Negative Nellies all winter. Give it time, Doug Melvin still has a better track record of making decisions in the Brewers' best interest than all of you put together.

10.5 for Thom Glavine? Is he really going to bring $10.5m in value to the Mets next season? Does it matter? I hope we aren't in contention next year (08) at the deadline because we're going to make a KILLING trading Sheets.

I think the Glavine signing was one of the better ones this offseason. It's only a one year deal, the Mets have money to spend, and this has to be the biggest sellers' markets for starting pitching ever. Oh how I wish the Brewers had any pitching to sell. Sigh. All future comments will take place in the above thread for me.
